Description
According to legend, Charlemagne held court here. The oak is at least 500 years old. The tree was hollowed by a gypsy family that burned the inside of the tree while cooking their food. In spite of being hollow, the oak leaves out each year. At the foot of the tree a small statue “sotê“ (dwarf) is placed, which is part of the legends of the Ardennes. Another small statue is placed on the wall of a water pump on the other side of the market square. These statues are made by Fernand Dumont, a local sculptor and artist. Since 1960 the oak is protected.
